follow
is the comprehensive term, and often implies the lead or guidance of one going before, but, in itself, gives no clue as to the purpose of the one that follows: ~ a path to town.
chase
implies speed in following, sometimes in order to catch what flees and sometimes to turn or drive away what advances: ~ing the boys out of the orchard.
pursue
usually suggests an attempt to overtake, reach, or attain often with eagerness and persistence, sometimes with hostile intent: ~d the bandits on foot.
trail
implies a following in the tracks of one gone before: ~ along behind the leader.
